Why You Don’t Need Discipline—You Need Systems
Introduction
How many times have you told yourself, “I just need to be more disciplined”?
It’s a phrase Kenyan women—especially mothers and professionals—repeat like a mantra.
Whether it's skipping a workout, eating late, or falling off a wellness routine, we often internalize
failure as personal weakness. But what if the problem isn’t your willpower?
At WellNia, we believe the answer isn’t discipline.
It’s systems—small, intentional choices built into your day that make showing up feel natural,
not forced.
The Myth of Discipline
We live in a world that glorifies hustle culture. The early riser. The meal prep queen. The woman
who runs five kilometers before dawn with a smile. But let’s be honest—most of us are
navigating matatu traffic, morning school prep, or late Zoom calls in noisy homes.
Discipline assumes you have time, energy, and mental space to spare.
Systems recognize that you don’t.
What Real-Life Looks Like
Here’s a familiar routine:
● Wake up at 4:30 AM to beat Nairobi traffic
● Prepare breakfast, school uniforms, and pack lunches
● Spend 9+ hours juggling meetings, deadlines, and WhatsApp group chaos
● Get home, parent, cook, collapse
● Wake up and repeat
Where is the window for a structured self-care plan?
Systems thrive when they respect this reality.
So, What is a System?
A system is anything that makes your desired behavior easier to repeat.
It removes friction, makes success automatic, and accounts for your human-ness.
Some simple systems for Kenyan women might include:
● Water habit: Keep a 1L bottle on your desk or matatu bag. Refill twice = 2L done.
● Walk habit: Get off one stop early or take evening walks around your estate after dinner.
● Mental reset: Use traffic time for 10-minute meditation with headphones (downloaded
audio works offline).
● Meal planning: Choose 3 go-to healthy meals for the week and rotate them—no guilt,
no Pinterest boards needed.
Habit Stacking That Works
James Clear (author of Atomic Habits) popularized a technique called habit stacking: attaching
a new habit to one you already do.
Try these:
● After brushing your teeth → 3 deep breaths
● After making tea → Fill your water bottle
● After school drop-off → Play a motivational podcast
● Before bed → Write one sentence about your day
The beauty of systems is that they don’t rely on motivation. They rely on design.
